Mine Closure: Employees and Communities

Throughout the life cycle of a mining project, Barrick endeavors to identify and address potential social impacts on local communities. An integrated environmental and social impact assessment (ESIA) is undertaken early in the development stage of a new mine. The impacts of closure are also considered at this time and, as far as possible, during the design phase of any sustainable community development programs.

During operations, we strive to build capacity in nearby communities where needed by supporting such activities and initiatives as primary and secondary education and healthcare, and by providing internships and on-the-job training, and skills development of our workforce and surrounding communities.

Over the life of the mine, community infrastructure, services, capacity and demographics may change substantially. Therefore, as mine closure nears, a closure social impact assessment (CSIA) is completed. This CSIA enables a more accurate and up-to-date assessment of potential impacts on nearby communities by mine closure. The results of the CSIA provide a basis for addressing and managing community needs. Planning for closure most often involves partnerships with local authorities, community members and other development non-government organizations. For example, one area that may need to be addressed relates to how community projects and infrastructures can be handed over to partners for long-term management. Plans will vary from mine to mine, depending on the local situation.

As well as addressing the needs of local communities, Barrick provides employee assistance during closure to identify new career opportunities as appropriate. Where possible, our goal is to offer continuing employment opportunities at other Barrick operations. We also offer out-placement services for employees who are not able to relocate.
