Porgera Joint Venture, Papua New Guinea
The development of natural resources is a principal engine of economic activity in Papua New Guinea (PNG). The Porgera Joint Venture (PJV) mine is one of the largest resource projects in the country and the largest private sector employer in Enga province, contributing approximately 11 per cent to PNG gross domestic product (GDP).
The PJV is a joint venture between the Enga Provincial Government, local Ipili landowners who own the land contained in the Mining Lease, and two PNG subsidiaries of Barrick Gold Corporation. Barrick acquired its interest in Porgera as a result of the acquisition of Placer Dome Inc. in 2006.
The mine invests extensively in community health, education, skills training, infrastructure and local business development and is a partner in the “Restoring Justice Initiative”, a government-community effort to strengthen law and order in PNG.
